| Christ Episcopal Church presents Echoes of Eureka : An Opera Bridging History and Hope July 20 and 21, 2026 4:00 pm |
| Premiered in Eureka in 2025 by the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, this beautiful opera written by Eric Tuan will be sung by the Vox Aurea Choir (Golden Voice) from Jyväskylä, Finland. The choir will also perform selections of Finnish music at the beginning of the program. Echoes of Eureka follows the true story of Charley Wei Lum, a young Chinese immigrant who settled in Eureka—which at that time housed the largest Chinese community in the state outside of San Francisco. When an angry mob expelled Eureka’s 300 Chinese residents in 1885, Charley narrowly escaped lynching, thanks to a courageous clergyman. A comment from the 2025 premier performance: We were “swept through a soundscape of oppression, solidarity, removal and resistance. Each song immersed us deeper, pulling us into the current of history. What a journey!” |
