An Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols
(Watercolor by Kathrin Burleson)
Christ Episycopal Church will hold a candle-lit service of Advent Lessons and Carols on the second Sunday of Advent, December 4, at 4:00 pm. A tea will be held in the parish hall following the service. All are invited and welcome to participate in this service of readings and music for the season of Advent.
The festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is one of the best-known services in the Western world. The format for the service originated in England in 1918 at King’s College, Cambridge, beginning a tradition that is now almost 100 years old.
This Advent service provides a vivid preparation for the coming of Jesus to earth as a human child at Christmas and his return in glory as the Christ at the Last Day. The service begins in darkness, symbolizing the expectancy of a darkened world awaiting its savior. As the liturgy unfolds, the words and music tell the story of how God’s mighty works bring light into our darkness. We hear of creation, the cries of the prophets, and of God’s promise to redeem his people.
Please join us for this special festival of Advent Lessons and Carols, as we anticipate the birth of Jesus and his return in Glory through readings, carols sung by the choir, and the congregational singing of hymns.
