On Sunday, August 23, at 4 pm, Christ Episcopal Church opens its doors to the community with the summer’s final “Sundays at 4” concert, titled The Power of Song. Performers Liz Smith, soprano, Nathan Smith, bass, and Val Phillips, piano, will present a program and concert featuring the history of the Negro Spiritual and its importance to African-Americans from slavery to today.
Val Phillips and Nathan Smith are HSU Emeritus professors who have organized and performed this program of spirituals. Nathan has been singing spirituals nearly all of his life. Liz Smith, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods, has sung with many choirs, including Kantorei, the Chameleon’s and Ferndale Community Choir.
Val, Nathan and Liz are thrilled to be presenting the Power of Song at Christ Church.
